Description

Raimund Pils Epistemic Voluntarism and Science Communication

When contemporary science makes claims about entities that are not directly observable, non-experts depend on communication that often silently presupposes a specific interpretive stance. Because current research in philosophy of science cannot single out a single correct stance and, as I argue, it is rather the case that multiple interpretative stances are rational, this needs to be reflected in science communication and science education. In this talk, I develop a principle of epistemic autonomy, aimed at respect for diverse epistemic standards in science reporting to address this challenge.
